Dirty Laundry

I’m back to washing my own clothes again. I don’t know why I got the idea that paying someone to do my laundry is going to give me more time to do other things. Sure, some people think it’s more convenient to just go to a laundry shop and bring that bulk of dirty clothes and weigh ’em up and pay for the services. Sounds convenient, I know. But along the lines, I realized I won’t include my underwear in that lot. No sir, I will not let other people see the skid marks and stains that may or may not be present , but you can never tell. There are times I am such a slob I may have worn the same pair of briefs a couple of times. You aware of the Side A and Side B mythos? Ask a college student from Recto and you’ll get an idea.

So yesterday I woke up and just  looked at the pile of tees, denim shorts, jeans and socks on my one laundry basket and asked myself, how did I let this molehill get so big, the clothes are spilling and the basket is bulging. After much thought, and two mugs off coffee, and after checking if the water will be available for the rest of the day (I am renting a matchbox of an apartment on the third floor, no water pumps, you get the idea, and yes it is Quezon City)  I began with the whites.

Always start your washing with the whites.

The entire procedure is a combination of science and tradition, handed down from generation to generation. My mother, bless her soul, nearly fainted the first time she saw me attempting to wash my own clothes back in high school. Not of shock, but out of sheer, ecstatic laughter at what I was doing wrong then. You must understand, my mother was a gentle soul, but when it comes to household chores, no one comes close to being a stickler for details. And so I learned the intimacies, the methods, soaking really dirty clothes overnight, using your hands instead of a brush, arranging some on a flat surface for the sun to do its work on tough stains. Now, like any service-related complaint, people start out asking nicely, because, popular knowledge has taught us that when we complain about utilities like electricity, water, mobile communication, you need a lot of patience and good nature , with hopes of actually being able to talk to someone who will be gracious enough to really listen and pass along the information to the necessary department or section, for the complaint to be acted upon.

I do know the drill.

I called Maynilad Hotline 1226 and that sweet voice telling me that my call is on queue and a customer service representative will soon be available to answer the call. For about 12 times, or so. Nevertheless, I tried calling again. Still that same sweet voice, that I know If I had held on a little longer, I would probably try to get details and ask her for a date. But no, no one human did answer the call. Maybe I’ll try email.

I got into the website and posted a complaint about the “intermittent” “dirty” and “odorous” water. Tough luck if they reply promptly. The last email I sent them needed a week for a response to come back to me.

Tried Twitter, that omnipresent socia-microblog-turned-gossip-cum-troll-medium and looked for @maynilad and @MAYNILADWATER so that at least people on the other end might be able to see the post  and maybe, just maybe, able to reply. But someone did call me, but only to ask fopr the details, of which, I can clearly remembered including on that email. Oh well, might as well repeat the process orally. And also I got an email saying they will get to it.

Still no one comes a-knocking on my door.

August 20 and 21, 2012

Now, I am employed so I won’t stay at home to wait for a spiffy Maynilad personnel to knock  on my door and as k about the complaint. Scuttlebutt says there was someone looking around but only asked Aling Rose, at the sari-sari store about the water being murky and intermittent. Said person made snide comments saying I was makulit about the complaint. These and the snide remark will be logged as  August 22,2012

Wrong Timing, Bad Timing, (Reprise)

I received this email from Maynilad 11:01 AM (8 hours ago) and opened and read the whole thing  at 7:40pm.

The date on the email is 20 June 2012. I guess things are really slow in their world. Took them more than 24 hours to transmit one email. But I am thankful they took the time to explain their side, although it doesn’t really help.

 Dear Mr. Paelmo:

 This is in reference to your blog entry published in the http://screamingmango.wordpress.com last June 7, 2012 entitled “Wrong Timing, Bad Timing” regarding the construction projects along Ero St., Novaliches, Quezon City.

 Please note that the photos of road diggings you posted and identified as a “Maynilad project” are actually road and drainage construction projects of the Quezon City government along Eros St. and Bernardino Road.

 Maynilad’s participation in this undertaking is limited to some pipe relocations along Eros St., which we did at the request of the local government to give way to their project. Our contractors began relocating the water mainline and service connections last May 28, 2012 and completed the work by June 6, 2012.
