Obesity Vs. Hunger

An article on Inquirer.net reads:

Ninety percent of Filipinos are at risk of suffering heart ailments because of unhealthy lifestyles, with Filipino children facing a bigger risk because adults misconstrue obesity as “cute.”

The Philippine Heart Association (PHA) said that far from being cute, fat children are in danger of developing heart disease, hypertension and other cardiovascular complications, as well as cancer, stroke, diabetes, severe pancreatitis, pulmonary diseases, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, gall bladder disease, osteoarthritis, gout and gynecological abnormalities.

Obesity is the No. 1 health problem in the world, with more than 1.1 billion people overweight and 300 million of them obese, according to Dr. Rosa Allyn Sy, program director of the Cardinal Santos Medical Center Diabetes Care Clinic and chair of the Philippine Diabetes Association council on childhood. (the whole story by Jeannette Andrade/Inquirer)

So, if that is what’s really going on, how come people are dropping dead elsewhere because of hunger? I’m not sure if a large percentage of those obese worldwide are Americans, who gripe and complain of lactose intolerance, who scoffs at Filipinos eating their dogs or worse, cringe at the sight of balut. But if it were true, And I have a hunch that it is, then we are really facing a conundrum, a blatant imbalance in the world ecology and food distribution. And look at what Filipinos read: medical reports, health surveys, dietary studies, all made by Caucasians / Westerners who don’t know shit from our Indio gastric sensibilities, but continue to follow suit, fanatically with hopes of morphing into that worldly acceptable color that is White. And our children are being brought up sift, and cuddly and lacks a substantial spine to support that ever widening girth because they are fed with fastfood quality slop.

Sometimes News can be very disconcerting.
